History

Since our founding in 1957, Eastminster has been a church devoted to service through missions. When the church began, we were deeply committed to missions in the Middle East and the unreached populations there.

Over the years, our devotion to service has only grown and in 1976 we embarked on Project Light. We were preparing to make a major expansion in our church building when a massive earthquake shook the country of Guatemala. In an outpouring of love, the congregation and leadership of Eastminster chose to donate half our construction fund to rebuild churches ruined in the earthquake rather than fully expand our own church. The Lord honored our mission to serve those in need as he worked powerfully and mightily through Project Light.

Since that time, our commitment to missions and service has not lessened. In the 1980s, Eastminster hosted the Perspectives course, which trained the congregation in the importance of missions, and eventually led 25 members to serve as full-time missionaries.

In 1999, we began the Millennium Project, challenging our congregation to raise an additional $3 million beyond our regular missions budget to support key projects. Our congregation’s generosity helped to aid organizations working with individuals with AIDS, hurricane survivors, the urban poor, residents of Indian reservations and those living in rural, poverty-stricken parts of the world.

Our commitment to be and make disciples of Jesus Christ around the world continues to this day. Currently, we partner with a number of Wichita-based ministries, including Hope Net, Choices Medical Clinic, International Student Inc., the Pregnancy Crisis Center, Habitat for Humanity, World Impact, and Young Life. Eastminster also supports 14 of our own members serving as full-time missionaries, and organizes several short-term missions trips each year. Our prayer is that through our dedication to mission work, the name of Jesus will be proclaimed to all people so they will know his great love for them no matter what their circumstance.
