Ok, we admit it, the word “ekklesia” is a little hard to pronounce…and hard spell…remember…google. BUT, that’s because once you get past the first few mispronunciations, it means so very much! ekklesia originally meant “a gathering” in Greek, and then Jesus took the word and transformed it to mean his very own gathering, or "a people called out to be the Church." How cool is that?
And that’s just what we want to be, his Church. A glorifying, serving, growing, imperfect, loving, unbelievable body of Christ-followers striving to worship God and love others in everything!
How did we get started? Well, Eastminster Church has been around quite a while. Since 1957, in fact. We have a great history of community, biblical teaching, missions and traditional worship. But while we wanted to honor the past and stay rooted in tradition, we also wanted to be part of the future. We realized church can look different for different people, as long as the focus stays on Jesus. So we took a risk. We decided to keep all the wonderful, traditional worship steeped in time-honored history, while adding a worship experience that was totally new and different. And that’s when ekklesia was born.
And it wasn’t easy. People have been praying, planning, promoting, and meeting about an ekklesia-style service for several years. But with God’s blessing, and lots of prayer, preparation and teamwork, ekklesia came into existence on Easter Sunday, April 12, 2009.
