A few months ago Pastor Stan commissioned me to lead two teams. The first team was tasked with finding a new Kids Director to step in after our beloved Mary Stephens retires. The second team was tasked with interviewing candidates from a ministry called CCO (Coalition for Christian Outreach) to be our Associate Director of College Outreach (more on that below).
The search team for the Kids Director position included myself, Joni Haralson, Kat Anderson, Amber Gibbens, Renee Edwards, John Maurer and Julia Shetlar. We are pleased to share that one of Eastminster’s own, Scott Montgomery will be the new Kids Director beginning May 1. He will work with Mary Stephens for the following month for a smooth transition.
Scott and his wife Gretchen have been members since 1994 and Scott is an ordained elder at Eastminster. They have four sons, two in college and twins who are seniors in high school. Scott embodies our goal to equip families as the primary place of discipleship in a child’s life. If you know the Montgomery family, you know Scott and Gretchen have walked out a life of intentional family discipleship, in partnership with the church, to raise four godly boys. Scott is also incredibly gifted in creativity, teaching and hospitality. We are thrilled to welcome Scott to the Eastminster team!
Last year our session sought a partnership with CCO, which is a ministry designed to partner with churches in reaching out to college campuses and discipling students within the local church. Early this year Pastor Stan introduced me to the the search team: Traci Pickert, Kristen Spear, Kenny Darbonne and Pat and Holly Sanderson.
Every year in February, CCO hosts their annual Jubilee conference where they bring more than 3,000 college students and CCO staff for a time of worship and learning through main stage speakers and breakout sessions. Our team was able to experience this weekend as it was a part of CCO’s strategy to help their partner churches experience and learn what CCO is all about. Our team landed in Pittsburgh, PA, on a Friday hit the ground running with partner interviews. This year CCO had 40 churches seeking partnership with them, and approximately 25 CCO candidates looking to be hired by one of the partner churches. Our team interviewed six different CCO candidates in the space of three and a half hours.
To say this trip was exhausting is an understatement, but it proved to be one the best ministry experiences I’ve ever had. The team experience was amazing, my confidence that God is at work through CCO is unquestionable, and the man that God has now called to serve on Eastminster’s staff in conjunction with CCO is another testimony of God’s desire to work through the local church to make his name famous among each generation.
On June 1 Joseph Wimer and his wife Lyndsay will become a part of our Eastminster family as they spearhead a CCO ministry on the WSU and Friends campuses. Joseph and Lyndsay came for a visit in early March as a result of the interviews conducted by our team at the Jubilee conference. On their visit to Wichita, it became clear to those involved in doing a second and more extensive interview, that God has uniquely called and equipped Joseph to partner with Eastminster. After a time of considering other opportunities through fasting and prayer, Joseph and Lyndsay clearly heard the call of God to leave Pittsburgh, PA, and come to Wichita. In this we rejoice!
It is with great joy and heartfelt thanks to God that he has chosen Scott and Joseph to join our staff in leading Eastminster Church to encourage people to enjoy the fullness of knowing, loving and becoming like Jesus. Please pray for the Montgomerys and the Wimers as they make their transitions and be sure to warmly welcome them!
